Cucurbita pepo

Winter luxury is also known as: Livingston’s pie squash, golden russett, luxury pie, queen luxury, standard pie, winter queen.

Heritage Harvest writes that this pie pumpkin was introduced as Winter luxury in 1893 by Johnson & Stokes of Philadelphia, and as Livingston’s Pie squash in 1894 by A W Livingston’s Sons of Columbus. It appears Livingston got the seed from one of his customers who had been growing it for many years. Apparently the variety we know and grow today was improved upon by the Gill Brothers seed company, and released in 1917.

Winter luxury produces 5-6 lb orange pumpkins, covered with silvery netting similar to that of a cantaloupe/muskmelon. The flesh has a smooth, fibre-free texture with the sweetest flavor. Winter luxury is a top notch pie pumpkin, and she’s also great in soups, cheesecakes, muffins, breads, fall decoration, etc etc etc.

Days to maturity: 100

25 seeds per pack.

Seed starting:

Start indoors 3 to 4 weeks before last frost. Sow 1inch deep - they like warm soil to germinate. Plant out once the soil is warmed, after all danger of frost. You can also directly seed them in your garden once the soil is warm. They will not tolerate frost. Space plants 5ft apart for vining types, and 3 ft apart for bush types.
