Brassica napus
This is a land race rutabaga with a lot of variation.
Rutabaga are a special root vegetable in that they are the product of a natural hybridization that occurred between a cabbage (Brassica oleracea) and the turnip (Brassica rapa).
These old root vegetables are very sweet, and will grow in size depending on the richness of your soil. They are a common food for humans, but are also used a animal fodder. What's more, many welsh - old English countries would traditionally carve them into jack-o-lanterns for Halloween.

Seed starting
Directly plant outside - sow thinly at 1/4inch deep depth as soon as soil can be worked. Start them in mid-summer for storage crops. Space young plants 6 inches apart.
