Solanum lycopersicum
Indeterminate, regular leaf tomato.
Annual, open pollinated.
This is a special variety that I got from a few gardeners in the Peterborough / Kingston area. They have also been referred to as Yellow Ladies.
Peterboroughians display a great enjouement for this variety of tomato - a very interesting cultural phenomenon, but not a surprising one since Peterborough seems to breed great gardeners who seem to know what's what. I learn from the people!
This variety is a sweet heirloom that is very prolific, producing bucketloads of beautiful pear shaped orange-yellow fruit.
Taste is sweet and very tangy.
This cultivar dates back to the 1800s, when it was brought from Europe. It is probably much older.
Days to maturity: 75 days after transplant.
minimum 25 seeds per pack.
Seed starting:
In our climate tomatoes like a head start - start seeds 6-8 weeks before the last frost (depending on your region). Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, keeping the soil warm and moist. Once the first true leaves appear, plant up into plug trays. Plant outside in full sun once all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Mulch with straw or other organic matter!
Tomatoes will do well staked.
Companion plants: basil, nasturtium, carrots, calendula.
