Brassica oleracea 

Kailaan beautifully translates to mustard orchid. Produces many small broccoli-like stalks with a slightly more bitter and sweeter taste than the Western broccoli. A great variety to grow instead of broccoli, as it is more tolerant of heat. Harvest shoots before the flower buds open (ideally) - but the whole plant is edible, and will continue producing side shoots all season.

Seed starting: 

You can start brassicas indoors 4 weeks before planting out date (which is as soon as the soil can be worked), or direct sow it outside as soon as the soil can be worked. Kale is a hardy plant that tolerates frosts and cold. Sow seed 1/8inch deep, lightly cover with soil. Plant close together for baby leaves, or thin further apart for full sized plants.
