Cucurbita pepo

Annual plant, Open pollinated.

Delicate, also known as: Bohemian squash, peanut squash, sweet potato squash.

Annual. Vining type.

Delicata is definitely ‘in’ these days...and apparently it’s been ‘in’ for over 100 years. What a legacy. It’s an incredibly sweet winter squash that is gorgeous, easy to cut, easy to cook, and tastes even better. What’s more the skin is perfectly edible. It is considered an early winter squash, in that it usually keeps for two months at the latest, but this seed was harvested from varieties that stayed firm until february.  The vines produce many small fruit.

Delicata was introduced by Peter Henderson in 1893.

Days to maturity: 95

25 seeds per pack.

Seed starting:

Start indoors 3 to 4 weeks before last frost. Sow 1inch deep - they like warm soil to germinate. Plant out once the soil is warmed, after all danger of frost. You can also directly seed them in your garden once the soil is warm. They will not tolerate frost. Space plants 5ft apart for vining types, and 3 ft apart for bush types.
