Brandywine Pink Tomato

Indeterminate, regular leaf tomato.

Annual, open pollinated.

Circa 1885, this is a classic in the Brandywine family of tomatoes. Believed to be introduced to American by Johnson & Stokes Seeds - its name probably associated to the Brandywine Creek which runs through Pennsylvania's Chester County (Gardening with Heirloom Seeds). Ben Quinsenberry would have been a original preserver of this variety, sharing it with Seed Savers Exchange.  These tomatoes are big, sweet, delicious and juicy. Great for tomato sandwiches, fresh eating and for freezing. They do ripen a little later in the season, but each plant produces lots of big tasty fruit. Since the fruit are so big, we suggest you support these plants well!

Brandywines are thin-skinned and tend to perform better in cooler temperatures !

Tomatoes are naturally quite drought tolerant, and yields are better when grown in the ground because their root systems are adventurous and incredibly resilient.

90 days from transplant.

minimum 25 seeds per pack.

Seed starting:

In our climate tomatoes like a head start - start seeds 6-8 weeks before the last frost (depending on your region). Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, keeping the soil warm and moist. Once the first true leaves appear, plant up into plug trays. Plant outside in full sun once all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Mulch with straw or other organic matter!

Tomatoes will do well staked.

Companion plants: basil, nasturtium, carrots, calendula.
