Physalis Pruinosa

Ground cherries have been recorded as early as 1837 in Pensilvania. Aunt Molly’s Ground Cherry is an old Polish heirloom variety, and its juicy golden fruit are very sweet and perfectly tart. Common to ground cherries, the fruit (enclosed in a brown papery husk) are ripe when they have dropped to the ground - don’t wait too long to pick these because the other creatures love them too! These fruit can store up to a month in their husks.  Like most tomatoes, they are quite drought tolerant, and produce an abundance of fruit! Yields are better when grown in the ground (this is true of all tomatoes, because their root systems are incredibly resilient).  Ground cherries do not need any trellising.

This variety is designated as an endangered heirloom by Slow Food Ark of Taste

Seed starting:

These guys like a head start - start indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost (depending on your region). Sow the small seeds 1/8inch deep, keeping the soil warm and moist. Plant outside in full sun once all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed.
